Behind The Lens

Location
California coastal beach, Pt Reyes Seashore. Marin County.
Time
Late afternoon.
Lighting
The coastal waters offer many moods, this is an overcast, but bright moment - the perfect lighting of outdoor subjects.
Equipment
Used a Canon 5D hand held. Lens, 16mm f6.7, 1/750th
Inspiration
This relic has been beached here for man many years. I have dozens of shots of it but this day I really liked the sky. I shot from a low angle because it magnifies the majestic nobleness of this old wreck.
Editing
I increased the saturation a lot and darkened the sky especially near the top and corners to force the eyes towards the center. I left the bow and clouds the brightest bringing the rest down to a lower value. I moved the bird over from the right side to the left for balance.
In my camera bag
I carry only 3 lenses and a Canon 5D Mark II because thats all I can afford. The lenses are: 16-35mm, 24-105, and 70-200f 2.8. A strobe, and a few reflectors and a steady bag and tripod.
Feedback
I try to see my subjects from a variety of angles, high, low, and through objects in the foreground when available as well as eye level. I always ask myself what angle will bring about the 'feeling' I am trying to capture and portray? In this case, shooting from a low angle gives this boat more presence and power. This is also exaggerated by using a wide lens and getting very close to the point of the bow. Placing the point of the bow off center adds to the strength I feel.
