Gargoyle sits atop Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris- on this day I climbed the 414 Stone Steps that wind up the Notre Dame Tower and out onto the Gallery of bigger than life Gargoyles. A great moment for my heart and soul. We danced till sunset. An immense joy for a humble photographer.

How did you get the cars to have little motion blur while the clouds to have more. It is a beautiful photograph but were the clouds that fast to capture so much motion in 1/200 second?

Behind The Lens

Location

This was a shot I did atop the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. I have always wanted to get up to the Gargoyle Gallery and see Paris from the POV of the ancient sentries that have lived there for over 600 years.

Time

This was shot in the afternoon. I climbed the 420 stone stairway to the gallery and stepped out - (panting) onto this scene. I was touched to the core with the beauty and grandeur. My spirit jumped out of my heart and seemed to dance with the spirit of this amazing sculpture. They close the gallery quite early so time up there is limited. You must make do with when you can get there.

Lighting

Since the clouds offered some softening of the light I set up my tripod and hunted for just the right lens, angle to try and capture the awesome magnitude contrasted with the gentle, timeless beauty of the City of Paris.

Equipment

I shot with a Canon 10D - it was all I had at the time. A tripod too.

Inspiration

I was in Paris for my first visit. I spent 10 days roaming the city scouring for images to bring back and share. Paris is truly an inspiration of beauty and vibrant energy. I tried to shoot this image in a way to capture those elements.

Editing

I did some minor sharpening and saturation addition in PS. I believe that every step of the photographic process is in some way 'manipulating' the process. Whether it is the aperture, shudder speed, position selected, cropping etc, There really is no 'purist' image. The act of using a camera and adjustments all the way to the Photoshop Tweaks, are part of the process ad tools. The point for me is to try to evoke the 'feeling' the feeling of the subject.

In my camera bag

Currently I own a Canon 5D Mll with a 70-105mm 5.6 L lens, and a 16-35mm L 2.8 L Canon, and a Canon 580 flash.

Feedback

Always approach a subject heart first. Take the time, if possible to roam around the subject and see things from more than an eye-level POV. Shooting non-moving subject require that I spend some thought looking for ways to tell more than just the 'surface' deal but also, the point of view of the thing itself. I imagine that everything, from stones to buildings, has a secret life and 'sees' the world around it in sometimes surprising ways. Most important is to find your heart in what you shoot.
