Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in our back yard, our house is surrounded by woods, so there is always an abundance of wildlife to shoot. I never really set out to find a subject or scene, I like to sit and wait, and let the scene come to me

Time

I took Harvey's photograph on a cold morning in January. I had just put some feed out for the birds. Usually when I do this, it takes a bit of time for the wildlife to notice. This paticular squirrel wasn't bothered by my presence and came down to eat. I had my camera on a lawn chair a few feet away so I sat down and started snapping

Lighting

The lighting on this particular morning was rather grey and gloomy, as are a lot of winter mornings in Delaware. In situations like this, I use sport mode only because they happen so quick, to fumble around the setting would have lost this shot

Equipment

My trusty Nikon D5200 body with a tamron 150-600mm zoom which I like to call "The Beast" hand held using my knees for stabilization

Inspiration

My wife and I are nature lovers, she is also an artist, working with Pastels, colored pencils and a few other mediums. A good part of my inspiration comes from her, I like providing her with subject to paint. That inspires me for virtually all of my photos

Editing

I did some minor adjustment to contrast, but other than that, I pretty much left it alone.

In my camera bag

I have my nikon d5200 body with a nikon 85mm F2.8 lens. I keep my Tamron 150-600mm zoom in a sling pouch close at hand. I also have 18-55 mm kit lense as well. I laso have a Nikon D3400 body in my bag as a back up, but the D5200 is my go to body.

Feedback

I've always found that my best photos come when I'm not necessarily looking for them, if I sit patiently, the subject will present itself. Patience and a really comfortable chair seem to work best for me
