Behind The Lens

Location

Pritchard Park last summer. The Drum Circle is a favorite local weekly event series for residents and tourists alike in Asheville. People are invited to gather in the amphitheatre-like circle and either dance, or bring their own drums and percussion and contribute to the beat! I hope that the coronavirus pandemic will end soon and that events like the Drum Circle, which contributes to our major cultural heritage and tourist attractions, will return!

Time

Afternoon before 5pm.

Lighting

I like the use of natural lighting, which captures the details of the crowd in true raw form without having to resort to distracting enhancements.

Equipment

Android Pixel.

Inspiration

I enjoy crowd scenes, having gazed at them in history books and newspapers. It's not just about capturing history, but the various levels of humanity occurring behind it.

Editing

Minimalist, mostly involving toning down the highlights and sharpening the image.

In my camera bag

Not including my camera, I have both an 18-140mm lens and 55-300mm lens, extra batteries, microfiber cleaning cloths and one or two extra cards.

Feedback

Composition and timing are the most essential assets. If you have a good eye for spotting something or a whole lot of things that helps to create a neatly assembled portrait worthy of a canvas painting, and if timing is able to capture all or most of the details with minimum blur, you will end up having quite a number of masterpieces in your portfolio.
