Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Cape Charles old ferry landing. Once the bridge was built the ferry fell out of use and the piers are slowly disappearing. A bunch of photographers from the Maryland and Virginia area would go to Cape Charles one to two times a year. We would rent a house since this is a family summer and beach area with few decent motels. Share the price of house brought the price way down and we had good times there. The last one was held several years when the one member who lived in Cape Charles left the area. We are hoping to visit again soon.

Time

This photo was taken on April 15, 2016, the last time we were together as a group. It was taken at 8:28PM EST and is a HDR copy of several pictures.

Lighting

The lighting is fantastic at times and we go to this spot several times at sunset. The body of water is the Chesapeake Bay.

Equipment

The photo was taken with a Nikon D800 and the Nikon 24-120mm F4 lens at 24mm, 1/125 sec, f/26, and ISO 100. Taken on a tripod, of course, but no flash.

Inspiration

One of my favorite scenics is either sunsets or sunrises. No matter how many times you shoot at the same location, the lighting and clouds will vary every time.

Editing

I shoot in RAW/NEF so yes, I use PP. I generally start in Lightroom, make some changes, open it up in Photoshop to finish. That includes sometimes using Topaz deNoise and Sharpen.

In my camera bag

I normally carry two bodies with me - my Nikon D800 and D500, along with several lens. Depending on what I am going to shoot, that will include my 24-120mm, 105mm Macro, either my 17-35mm or Tokina 11-16mm, and my 80-200mm f/2.8. My Nikon 200-500mm goes in its own case. When I am shooting sunrise/sunsets I don't take my 200-500mm. For an airshow, my primary lens are the 80-200mm and the 200-500mm.

Feedback

Return to your favorite spot often. The light will be great sometimes and sometimes you get nadda.
