Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taking from my home town Lauderdale, Hobart, Tasmania. Although I dont live here anymore it will always be my spiritual home. The photo is of Lauderdale Beach on Fredrick Henry Bay, The dominant fearure here is the remains of an old boat jetty that was here long ago.

Time

The photo was taken early morning just after dawn. I was here for sunrise to capture the twlight and sunrise. This image was one of the last photos I took in this session. As the sun got higher it created nice contrast on the water and sky, That made ideal for a Black and white photo.

Lighting

As mentioned the light from the raising sun and cloud cover made the contast in the scene ideal for Black and White photography. I do love black and white photography and I was so pleased that the conditions presented me to take this kind of photograph.

Equipment

I have very limited equipment as i am an amateur in its true meaning (for the love) I have a cannon D500 DSLR and a cheap tripod, I may have you a remote shutter realeased to capture a long exposure.

Inspiration

As mentioned, I love Black and white photography and Lauderdale is my Spritual home. In this photograph I wanted to capture that spritual connection I have to this place and the ruins if the old jetty gave me the icon in the photograph.

Editing

The only post processing I did was adjust the levels to aceive optimum contrast between my shadows and Highlights. But this image is pretty much as it is in its raw image.

In my camera bag

As mentioned before, I have very little equipment and its getting old my equipment. It what they call the starter kit. Two lenses wide and telephoto a tripod and the Cannon D500 DSLR. Maybe a couple of filters UV, Infared etc.

Feedback

These images are usually achieved early morning or late afternoon, due to the lighting conditions. Photographers refers to them as "goldern hour" is when the sun is low in the sky and if your shooting in colour all you photos with have this nice goldern side lighting. Or if your shooting Black and white you get that nice side light, as well as nice spectum of contrast with your highlights and shadows. I take multiple shots Bracketing them with correct exposure and the shoot over and under exposure. I usually shoot in f22 to maxium depth of field and sharpness making my exposure longer, But this gives me more creative control over the exposure and contrast, As i try to achieve detail in the darkness shadow as well in the brightest highlight.
