Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was take at Crime Lake, Failsworth in Greater Manchester. This lake is in the Daisynook country park.

Time

This was taken just as the sun was breaking the horizon on a cold January morning, around 8am.

Lighting

The sun was just coming up as the kingfisher landed on the branch, with the light coming over my right shoulder. Had to shoot at a relatively slow shutter speed as it was still not full sunlight.

Equipment

Used a Nikon D5600, 150-600mm Tamron lens on a man grotto tripod

Inspiration

I had wanted to take a photo of a kingfisher for some time and someone at work mentioned that there was a Facebook page with a number of people posting pictures of this bird. Knowing there was a regular sighting of the bird I made plans to get there early.

Editing

I lifted the shadows in raw in photoshop and made sure the background was blurred as much as possible so that kingfisher stood out. I cropped to a square as this is a favourite shape at the moment.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D5600, the 150-600mm lens, 55-200mm Nikon lens, 18-55mm lens, filters, spare lens cleaner, spare battery and tri or mono pod.

Feedback

Plan your trip and be prepared to get cold. It is important to know where you are going, especially if there are reported sightings in the area, go early so that you can scout the location for the best views and have the patience. Check the weather and go out on a day that suits the image you want. The be prepared to wait for the right shot, then make the shutter work as you may not get the opportunity again. I was lucky it landed close enough to get this image, the rest of the shots I took it was in the distance.
