Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo where millions and millions of other people have photographed, at Tunnel View in Yosemite. I tried to make this picture different than the normal view seen from Tunnel View (wonderful as those are).

Time

Mid-morning.

Lighting

Clear skies, few clouds, lowish sun due to the time of year.

Equipment

Sony A7Riii, 24-70mm lens, tripod. No filter or flash.

Inspiration

We had driven up for the day and this was the first place we stopped at in Yosemite. I know Ansel Adams and Kim Westons photography well and wanted to do something similar but different than what others do. I move the focus of the picture to the right capturing El Capitan and avoiding Half Dome and then post-processed to emphasize the dark skies.

Editing

Post-processed to make it look more like it was made with a film camera using a deep red filter. This makes the sky more dramatic and the few clouds stand out better.

In my camera bag

I normally take as little as possible. As this was a one day trip I took the above gear and spare (older) body and another lens.

Feedback

Study images from the area ahead of time. See what you like and don't. Think about how you can make a good picture with your own ideas, how you can personalize what has been done before.
