Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken during the Norwegian championship in underwater photo arranged in Haugesund, a small town at the west coast of Norway. There were about twenty photographers in the area and the others chose to go deep. I prefer working with a combination of natural sunlight and strobes and found some nice and fresh kelp for a background. When a wrasse (fish) came by, i made what i feel is a nice description of the besuty in the kelp forests of the Norwegian coast.

Time

The photo was shot about 10 in the morning when the sea was still quite calm.

Lighting

The lighting is a combination beteeen sunlight and two potetgull underwater strobes on ttl mode.

Equipment

This was shot with s Canon 5D mk IV with an EF 17-40 mm lens at 17 mm. To keep details in the surface, i added a B&W graduated grey filter. The equient was sealed in an Ikelite underwater housing with two Ikelite Ds160 strobes.

Inspiration

The beauty of the sea inspired me to take this photo.

Editing

I did some minor adjustment of shadows, gamma and highlights in raw converting.

In my camera bag

I normally have underwater photo equiplent, which mean underwater housing, full framme dslr, underwater strobes for macro and wide angle, video lights and diving equipment.

Feedback

The most important is to be familiar to diving in rough oceans - it is important for tiur safety and for the possibility to make a photo. Number two is to train on using strobes without lighting up all the bubbles and floating dust. Use the strobes for fill-in light and the sunlight for the rest. Be patient and wait for the fish to come to you - they are curious and will come if you dont chase them.
