Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Ocean Beach California, about 15 miles from the Spring Valley house I called home for 10 years.

Time

I was in Ocean Beach to run an errand, and because of the high surf, I headed down the pier sometime around high noon.

Lighting

It was a bright, sunny day, the kind they tell you is bad for photography. I've never subscribed to that notion. No matter what the light is, find something that expresses what you feel, and bring all of your powers to that...

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7200 mounted with a Nikon Af-S 16-80mm F/2.8-4E lens. Best DX len's I have ever used, hands down. Nothing even comes close.

Inspiration

It was a brilliant day, after a storm. The waves were high and that always brings high energy to the day. I watched this surfer through my viewfinder, navigating the long swell. The second the dark area of the wave framed his head, I shot. I knew I grabbed the "decisive moment."

Editing

I shoot everything in RAW, and so basic developing is a must. This entails basic sharpening and lens correction. Other than that, I pulled the color calibration a touch towards cyan. To me, it looked good at that point.

In my camera bag

When I go out shooting, I carry everything, multiple bodies, flashes, tripods, and tons of lenses, primes and zooms alike. I don't fight the battle between prime or zoom supremacy. I want what I need to make images when I arrive and survey the scene, not some school of thought. When I'm just driving around I try to keep the D7200 kit mentioned above always with me. I have considered getting one of those fine fixed-lens point and shoots out there, but I honesyly don't think they can compete with my D7200 kit in anyway other than convenience.

Feedback

There is an oft used security slogan in the US (and possibly elsewhere), "See something? Say something." That's how I feel about photography. YOU need to say something about what YOU see. Nothing about your gear is unique; only the person holding it is distinctive. You need to find a way to say what YOU feel about something in a way that makes the viewer feel it too. Other than that you will never rise above a cover band at the local bar, or worse a snapshot shooter... Put yourself into it!
