Behind The Lens
Location
During a trip to Canada and Alaska in August 2019 our tour went to Maligne Lake in the Jasper National Park Alberta.Time
The image was taken at around 4.30pm on a very overcast day with rain threatening, making the view even more surreal, our guide had told us the story behind the Islands name and its importance to the local First Nation people as a sacred place.Lighting
This as stated above was a very overcast day with little or no wind allowing for calm water and reflections. The lighting was quite poor as it was also getting late in the afternoon.Equipment
This was shot with a Panasonic Lumix G7 with a Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4 lans. No flash or tripod was used.Inspiration
We had been told the importance of the Island and as we came around the bend in the path the Island in the low light had a surreal atmospher about it which matched its history.Editing
Unfortunately our group was pressed for time and trying to get the best vantage point was proving difficult and as I shoot in manual mode, the settings were not optimal as the lighting had changed dramatically since our last stop and i was using my second camera which had the wide lens on it. Because of this the image was under exposed so I had to increase the exposure which created noise so the image was then run through Topaz DeNoise and Sharpen AI. I converted the image to Black & White and enhanced the contrast and clarity. In my camera bag
Depending on what I am planning to shoot and wether I am travelling or close to home n Australia this varies. For Wild Life I tend to use my Panasonic Lumix G9 with the 100-400 Zoom due to its size and light weight. If weight is not an issue then I might use my Canon 5DmkIV with either a 70-300 zoom or a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. Also depending on if I plan to do any Macro work I could have either the Olympus 60mm Macro lens or the Canon 100mm Macro.Feedback
Taking photos while traveling with a tour group can be trying as time can be an issue so always try to be at the front of the group so that you can have a better chance to get a good viewing angle and more time to set up correctly. In hind sight I should have probably have had that camera set up as Aperture Priority around f/11 with Auto ISO knowing it was going to be for wider shots. Remember that if using a micro 4/3 camera like the G7 or G9 they do have an issue with noise at ISO over around 600 so restrict the ISO range and be prepared to do some work removing noise in post.
