Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a summer trip to the Dolomites back in 2018, when I was first beginning to get into photography.

Time

This photo was taken at 10:49am. I was driving through the mountains on my way to the next stop on the trip, but chose to take a short break to stretch and appreciate the view at the pass.

Lighting

The morning lighting amazingly contrasted the cragginess of the peak in the distance. It illuminated the whole scene and made it almost ethereal.

Equipment

This was before I invested in a quality DSLR. I actually took this with a simple point and shoot Canon Powershot (goes to show that you don't need a fancy camera to take nice pictures).

Inspiration

I loved the way that the peak rose up behind the sloped hill, and appeared so isolated, even though I was completely surrounded by mountains.

Editing

I adjusted the colors to approach a more teal color scheme, and give the whole thing a mystical vibe.

In my camera bag

First things first, a spare battery. That's the most important thing to me besides the camera, which is my Nikon D3400 body. Then I've got my kit 18-55mm lens and a telephoto 70-300mm lens, which I like to tote around because I'm too cheap for a portrait prime lens and the telephoto achieves a shallower depth of field than the kit lens. Lastly, I keep my tripod and a couple filters (polarizer, neutral density, colored filters) in the bag.

Feedback

Go outside, explore nature in your area. Check out state parks nearby. Take a hike. Keep your camera ready. You don't need to be in some exotic location to take nice pictures.
