Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my living room with all lights turned off.

Time

This was taken sometime during the wee hours of the morning. I could not sleep so I got up to sit in my recliner and read on my Kindle. Graycie curled up on the edge of the footrest.

Lighting

I loved the way she looked and tipped my Kindle to illuminate her face. I loved the effect so I grabbed my phone and snapped this treasure.

Equipment

This was taken with the camera in my phone, a Motorola g6.

Inspiration

I'm always taking photos of my pets especially Graycie, who is often near me, wherever I am. The light from the Kindle just gave an outline of her features in the dark room and I loved the effect.

Editing

The only thing I did post processing was to crop the image just a tad, so Graycie filled the screen.

In my camera bag

Normally, I carry a Canon Power Shot SX20 with built in zoom. I'm an amateur photographer on a tight budget. I use my SX20 in auto and in manual mode or partial manual mode.I also always have my phone with me so I utilize the camera in it often when I don't have my Canon. In the case of Graycie in Low Light, I would have lost the cat, the light and the pose if I had moved her to go get my camera. The best camera in this case was the one I had near me.

Feedback

Experiment taking photos in low light. I know most emphases is on using manual mode and I like experimenting doing that. But sometimes, letting the camera in auto setting adjust to the light available is the best solution for the place and time. Try taking shots of your lit Christmas tree in the dark or using tree lights as your illumination on a subject. Or, as I did, let your tablet screen be the illumination.
