Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken at the Sint Joris (Saint George) Church in Eindhoven. The wedding couple went for a classic wedding, which holds ceremonial, beautiful and emotional parts of a wedding.

Time

The wedding at the church started at 13:00u UTC +1. This wedding shoot is one of my favourites, because the classical wedding always brings a lot of special moments like seen here where there is a real give away moment to her groom. The father gives full trust to the groom chosen by the bride by a ceremonial handover.

Lighting

Light in a church is always challenging. I shoot a lot in churches for many ceremonies, but I’m always aware to choose the right location to avoid a mixtures of colours, coming from glass windows, artificial lights from the church and sometimes open doors with direct natural light from outside. Every time I turn to a certain direction the light temperature changes. Therefore I use auto white balance and correct the colours always in post. Despite the challenges of light, churches also offer excellent light shows by time. Combines with incense, candles and sun beams, catching emotion of the ceremony completes the shot. In this shot, I used the reflection of the floor to get more emotion and actual light scenes in the shot. I used my tilt screen and live view to ensure I captured the right moment.

Equipment

For this shot I used my Nikon D750 with the Tamron 24-70mm G2 lens at 62mm,using natural light.

Inspiration

I love to shoot people, I most like to capture their special moments. This can be a any church ceremony, but also children, families etc. This photo did remembers my own wedding. Her father did not bring my wife but he looked and showed having all trust in me, which I don’t want to harm it since that moment. Therefore each time this moment appears, I do all I can to catch this special wedding moment which holds many many unfolded gifts from a father to his daughter to the groom.

Editing

Yes, any photo from me get post processing. Colour and lens correction and light balance like face lights, but all to keep it as natural as possible. I want to avoid photo’s which superb and have all whow factor, but which is a phot that does not reflect the real situation. For me it’s always finding the right balance between real situation and how far I can go by editing.

In my camera bag

For weddings I always use two bodies and depending the lens mounted I take the body with the lens needed for that moment. I've a Nikon D750 and a Nikon D850, on both camera's I swap lenses during the day. For the complete day I work with 4 lenses. Tamron 15-30mm G2, Tamron 24-70mmG2, Tamron 70-200mm G2 and the Nikon 105mm f1.4 For the complete day, my car is also loaded with a tripod, 4 flash lights with stands and reflectors. Flashes are one Godox AD600 Witro pro, one AD400 pro and two TT685 speedlights. Reason that I use Nikon, is not that others are not good, but because I shoot a lot inside. Noise control is a very important aspect for me. Today many camera’s perform very well in low light, but I started once with a certain brand and all my equipment, software and studio equipment is bought around the Nikon Eco system.

Feedback

Stay close to yourself, your vision will reflect your style. If you try being someone else, your always behind and anyone will become confused. But this said does not mean that you cannot learn from others, others who probably are better. I’m also learning every day and I try different styles, I try to learn from others and the moment I understand their technique and idea, I try to develop it to my own style and vision and start to improve myself again. If I look back for 4 years until now, I also really see my own improvements. That’s fine, I’m still improving! If I did not see this improvement, I would become worried. I’m happy I also see a growth into my own style. More recognize my photos and I also see people trying to do the same I do already. I also noticed it from whom I thought I never could reach that level. The moment I noticed this behaviour and started to see others recognized my photos even w/o subscription I did understand I developed my own style. My advice is to stay close to yourself, experiment with how others realized their photo and try to do the same, but don’t be disappointed if your shot is different, it might be that your shot is closer to your style than you thought before. Be critical to yourself and look to others with a view to improve. What should you do different in the shot?. Try to incorporate this difference and see if it brings what you though it should be. If it did, I’m sure the path is free to become a great photographer!
