Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was literally taken around the corner where I live. We see here "de Dommel" in Son en Breugel early in the morning.

Time

This was not to early in the morning. You might see the sun already shining trough the tree at the right, but early enough in the morning to ensure the frosty white blanket was still there. It was cols, but the nature made me warm overall. Whow... this is one shot of a series I made that morning. The water started to create some fog due to the sun heating the top of the water and the sun strikes in the fog/ mist made all the complete winter wonderland view. I would not have taken this shot if my daughter was not going to her work and did not call me. Still in my bed, she called me; "Dad, you really have to get up now, it's all amazing now, come on, this you do not want to miss. I cannot shoot the atmosphere yet with my smartphone so you have to come with your camera. But be fast!" So I did. 5 to 10 minutes later I was on location (round the corner) and I was impressed about the atmosphere. She was right. It was wonderfull so no time for thinking, just take the shot, and I was lucky being in time and having my new camera were I could see already upfront what it should become. So I took the shot, for the moment in time I never will forget.

Lighting

The light was just perfect, the temperature was perfect, the clouds, the sun all was perfect for the shot. Despite the fact I already made a lot of photo's at this position, I never realized this shot before. It was the first day of frost in 2021 in my village which gave a wonderful white winter blanked on the plants, trees and flora. The whole situation was perfect lighted by the sun but all was just here for 10-15 minutes. After about 15 minutes all was gone again, the ice was melted and the white blanked was almost gone. The fog disappeared and all turned back to normal. A situation from which I already have had many shots before.

Equipment

For this shoot I used my brand new Nikon Z6 mark 2. The capture with this sensor is amazing. What you see is what you get. I tried as wel a Nikon 105 f1.4, a Tamron 15-30mm G2 and a Tamron 24-70mmG2. In the end only the Tamron 24-70mmG2 did the job. Not to narrow, not to wide, but at 45mm @f8 with a shutter speed f 1/160 handheld

Inspiration

For this photo, it was my daughter. She took a picture with her smartphone underway to her job and sent it to me with the clear request; you have to go now!. Actually I go out for 3-4 times a year shooting sunrises in our neighborhood, so she knows I do and I like those morning shots. Not just the photo, but also the nature which is becoming a wake is so beautiful.

Editing

I was almost impossible to capture all perfect so I shot raw. Once at home I started to edit the photo to get all I saw and tried to capture back in the photo by adjusting the sliders within Nikon Capture NX-D, Affinity photo and Luminar AI. Luminar AI is an incredible tool to accent the sky and details again. So I used this to get all part back like to moment I was there.

In my camera bag

For landscape photography I always choose upfront. "A day of close ups? -&bt; Tele, a day of general shots, the 24-70 of a wide angle in case I want to capture the full atmosphere but I also tek my bag with me were all is in. Than I walk with my D850, Z6ii, with my Tamrons 70-200mmG2, 24-70mmG2 and 15-30mmG2. I also have my 105 f1.4 with me and extension tubes for macro shots. Sometime I also drop some Godox flashes in my bag. (speedlights TT685 for foreground fill in).

If you get an opportunity, like a call I got, don't wait, just go. It's gone before you know, and you never know if you get that opportunity once more.
