If you ever find yourself in Broken Bow, Nebraska, I highly recommend you stop at the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway Interpretive Center. Located in a restored red barn on the edge of town, the Center has artifacts from the area, hiking trails, a working windmill, butterfly garden, and helpful staff.

While there, we picked up a copy of the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway Audio Tour. The disc provides highlights along your journey and was one of the best purchases of our entire road trip. I cannot recommend this drive enough - beautiful landscape, unique sites, and fascinating history of this part of Nebraska. Many spots we would have just passed had we had not heard about it on the tour.
