Recently, I had the pleasure of attending one of the walking tours through Beaufort, South Carolina. I honestly was not aware of the rich history of this little coastal town. During the tour, our wonderful guide Janet had us stop for a bit at the Parish Church of St. Helena to tour the grounds and see the altar carved and gifted by the salors of the U.S.S. New Hampshire during the time of Reconstruction. Being established in 1712 makes St. Helena’s one of the oldest churches in America. A dozen years after its establishment, the original church was built on the site and now looks much as it did in 1842, after its final enlargement. The church also hosts one of the “most historic burial grounds in America,” being the final resting place for veterans of every major conflict since its founding.
