Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the Londolozi Private Game Reserve, Sabi Sands, South Africa

Time

The shot was taken in early morning light at 8:20 AM. There is nothing like golden hour light !

Lighting

The light was very bright, even for early in the morning. Shadows were minimal here with straight on shot !

Equipment

I had my trusty Canon 7D with a Canon 400 DO with 1.4 extender. I do not remember if I was hand holding this or resting on the side of the vehicle but no tripod was used.

Inspiration

I love cats ! This shot was unique in that the little cub was on a slightly raised mound of dirt so I was sitting at eye level to him as he was walking towards me. It is unusual to be able to get eye level shots with wild cats.

Editing

Post processing was basic levels, contrast with very minimal cropping if any.

In my camera bag

I currently carry 3 bodies, the Canon 7D II, Canon 1Dx and Canon 1D III. Lenses are the 400 DO with 1.4x, Canon 100-400L II, and 70-200L II 2.8. I also have a 70-300L and 28-70L that is in my camera bag.

Feedback

Luck and timing plays big into getting good wildlife shots. You have to be at the right place at the right time and have an extreme amount of patience. You can be sitting at a lion sighting with just boring sleeping cats and within seconds, they can be up and about moving around. Patience, patience, patience ! Also when taking animal shots, get as low as possible (and safe) as eye level shots are both the hardest to get and the most rewarding.
