One can practically hear the horses' hard breathing and feel the pounding of their hooves. An amazing image.

Thank You for your positive comment. I try very hard to capture the feelings in my images. I only know from the feedback if I was successful. is all about the feeling

Love the perspective and crop on this shot. You can ‘feel’ the action.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Woodlake Rodeo round-up during a team calf roping event.

Time

I was photographing all day from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm at this rodeo. I estimate that this was taken sometime around the middle of the afternoon because of the natural lighting.

Lighting

I love to use natural light for outdoor events with fill flash to capture the detail.

Equipment

All of my equipment is Nikon. The lens I used is a 70-300 auto-zoom, and I use a fill flash. I do not use a tripod so I have more freedom to move around, but I do sit on the ground for a better eye-level viewpoint. Also, I use the arena rail to stabilize the camera and brace it against my shoulder to prevent any movement.

Inspiration

I love action photography that captures the speed and power of the horses and rider. The horse closest to me was looking right at me and you can see the concentration of the riders. It was exactly what I was looking to show in this image.

Editing

I always do the post-processing. Sometimes it is just to make minor adjustments to lighting or focus, other times it is major replacing backgrounds or removing distracting objects.

In my camera bag

I always have all of my equipment with me at all times. Especially when you are working a show ring. You never know when something will break or jam and there is no excuse for missing the once in a lifetime shot.

Feedback

Know your subject and how they react to a situation and how it transfers into action and movement. I study equine magazines constantly and I have been published in the world and National Arabian and Horse magazines representing farms and shows over the 30 years I have been Professional photographing horses. I love the sport horse, attended horse performance events studying the power and physical agility horse's display when they perform, I have photographed on ranches and arenas all over the United States. Always ask questions of those people in the know with the experience you are looking to achieve. Many professional horse photographers share the ideas they have used in the past.
