Location
This picture was taken in a large field covered with wildflowers and green grass. There is a big storm coming in with high winds and dark clouds approaching. The Mare is named Nariha protecting her young foal named Aurkive. They are animated, excited, and scared and Nariha is trying to keep Aurkive close to her side.Time
This was taken mid-morning on a cold cloudy day.Lighting
Everything was taken with natural lighting to capture the mood. with only fill flashEquipment
Digital Nikon camera with 200 mm Zoom lens and a tripod.Inspiration
I was inspired by the mood of the morning and the animation and attitude of the horses.Editing
Yes, I use Photoshop to adjust whites/blacks, then I color correct the reds, greens, and blues for best optimization for the image. Then I adjust the curve and the sharpness for a realistic result. I then check the images for flaws or distracting objects and removing them.In my camera bag
All of my cameras are Nikon, 4 lenses with different focal lengths, tripods, filters, flashes, lighting equipment, power equipment. Everything I have I keep in my car so if something stops working I always have backups so I can change or replace my equipment as needed.Feedback
Always study your subject over and over again to see how it reacts to different environments. Watch the expressions and attitudes most of all. Horses and critters have their own habitual actions and if you discover their habits you increase your chances of getting the shot you want and when you want to take the shot. Most of all take many pictures with a fast shutter speed, and continuous feed to get that perfect shot you want to capture.
