Behind The Lens

Location

We started our journey on the Li River Cruise from Guilin and reached Yangshuo around 5 PM. The cruise stopped for a photo shoot with a Chinese fisherman and his Cormorants a few minutes before we got off the cruise. One of my fellow passengers whom I've befriended while on the cruise, posed with the birds on the deck and I got the opportunity to take a couple of shots. She too is an enthusiast photographer and was very happy when I shared this picture with her.

Time

This was taken on February 6, 2019 at 16:45.

Lighting

The overcast sky and soft lighting emphasized the subjects and gave the scene a dreamy look. In my opinion, if it was a sunny day, the shadows and contrast would have created more distractions.

Equipment

This was shot using Canon EOS 60D with a EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

The mountains, their reflection in the water, a thin horizon and an evenly lit sky made a perfect background for this capture. The birds and the women facing in the same direction gave this photo some extra weight without loosing the overall balance.

Editing

It was a gloomy day and the lighting wasn't so great. I had to lift the shadows a little, brighten the sky and do some minor color correction to get the saturation right. It was a quick capture and I didn't frame it right so, I had to fix that in the post as well.

In my camera bag

I generally go on full day tours so I prefer to travel light. I always take with me my Canon EOS 60D with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens, EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens, TRIOPO M2508 Aluminum Alloy Tripod, Variable ND filters, extra battery pack and memory cards.

Feedback

The photo shoot with fishermen on Li river cruise is roughly a 5 minute stop. It is better to take a small boat or bamboo raft near Yangshuo if you want to spend more time.
