Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the village of Watkins Glen NY at the 2019 Grand Prix Festival. They run street and vintage racing cars on the old race circuit that goes through the village.

Time

It was late afternoon. It had started to rain and I didn't want to get my camera gear wet, so I took shelter under a store roof overhang. Cars were still going by, so I decided to do some panning shots from my less-than-ideal location. I got some pretty good shots, this is one of my favorites.

Lighting

Just natural lighting on an overcast day.

Equipment

I used my Canon Rebel SL1 (handheld) with the 18-55mm IS STM kit lens. Nothing fancy!

Inspiration

Cool cars that make lots of noise inspired me to take this photo. And I like the look of panning shots.

Editing

The photo was cropped and straightened. I also removed the color from the busy background and added a sepia tone for a warm vintage look. And the usual lighting and color enhancements for that extra "pop."

In my camera bag

Lately I've been carrying a Canon Rebel SL1, Canon 18-55, Canon 10-18, Canon 50 f/1.4, Sigma 18-300, and a Sigma 150-600. And a couple of extra camera batteries. Sometimes I add some macro extension tubes.

Feedback

The best advice I can give is to practice panning. A lens with image stabilization that supports panning can help. Experiment with shutter speed. I usually use the slowest shutter speed that will result in no vertical blurring. That speed will vary depending on distance, lens, subject speed, and skill/ability. 1/15 worked here with the car going a moderate speed through a crowded village. Focal length was 55mm with a 1.6x crop factor.
