Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot in the Riparian Reserve in Chandler, Arizona. It's an amazing nature reserve teeming with different types of wildlife. I happened to be walking down the trail when I saw one of the many rabbits looking up at the branches above him. I anticipated he may jump or stand so I got into position and started shooting!

Time

It was nearing golden hour and it was a hot summer day in Arizona, nearing 110 degrees, so shooting in the evening is necessary.

Lighting

The lighting was on the warm side and in post I drew some additional emphasis on the animal as the background was busy branches and leaves.

Equipment

I shot this on my Canon 5D MK IIII with a Canon 70-200 MKII (IS) lens. I always shoot RAW in manual mode so I can much more flexibility in post while maximizing control over the camera while I shoot. It takes some getting used to, but once you master your camera the possibilities are limitless.

Inspiration

The inspiration behind capturing this unique moment was always striving to portray my subjects in interesting ways. Seeing a wild rabbit stand on it's back legs to feed is a moment that feels incredibly vunerable and innocent.

Editing

I love to make my photos really pop! In this image it included darkening the blacks, adding some vignetting, sharpening the key elements on the rabbit and adjusting color sliders to add some drama.

In my camera bag

I normally keep a variety of lenses with me but only a single body. This includes some primes, such as a 35mm and 85mm as well as some zoom lenses like a 70-200 F2.8 and a 16-35mm F2.8. I always attach these to a full frame Canon 5D MKIIII. Additional accessories include: Lens filter kit, cleaning supplies and a speedlight.

Feedback

The biggest advice I can give is, just go shoot! Getting out and exploring is the best way to come across these moments. It also requires patience. Many trips may result in images you don't keep for your portfolio or not running into any interesting moments at all, but if you persist you will capture amazing things over time.
