Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near the Salt River Reserve in Arizona. The area is well known for its wild horse population, so many photographers come to the area. In this instance I followed one particular band of horses for hours, until they were miles from everyone else. In that moment I was able to watch their behaviour and capture unique moments.

Time

It was a memorable day in the summer. I had quietly followed these horses for miles and several hours through the day. It was about 7 p.m. and the sun was just entering blue-hour. After capturing the image I had to get back to the car quickly so I wouldn't be out in the middle of the desert in the dark, but taking a little risk produced an amazing image.

Lighting

I wanted this image to be full of unique colors as Arizona sunsets are capable of producing. It was entering blue-hour and a bit overcast, so the light was softened significantly. This is what produced some of the cooler light and amazing color!

Equipment

This image was captured using a Canon 5D Mark IIII utilizing a Canon 70-200mm II (IS) f2.8. The 70-200 in particular served very well in this scenario as it has the zoom range needed, due to only being able to get within 50 feet of the animals, as well as opening to f2.8 which worked very well in this low-light scenario.

Inspiration

I have observed and captured images of our wild horse population many times, but would typically get shots that others would get. I wanted to capture a unique moment. It required much more patience and time, but the payoff was tremendous.

Editing

I do implement post processing in my workflow to really bring emotion or feelings out in my work. In this particular shot, I had the time to really get the setting dialed in, in camera, so post was fairly straightforward. I bumped up the contrast a bit (as I shoot raw) and also emphasized the coloring in the image via the color sliders. Lightroom is my go-to editing platform.

In my camera bag

I've typically been known to carry one body, my Canon 5D MKIIII and a few different lenses so I can capture a variety of situations: Canon 70-200mm II (IS) f2.8 Canon 85mm f1.8 Canon 50mm f1.4 Sigma Art 35mm f1.2 Canon 16-35mm II f2.8

Feedback

Anything to do with shooting animals requires patience. I would suggest that you find an area with the animals or horses you want to shoot, pack a good zoom lense and be able to spend the time needed to follow and watch for unique situations!
