UNESCO ranked the Dougga site on the World Heritage List in 1997, considering it to be the "best preserved Roman town in North Africa". The city, which is in the countryside, is well protected from modern urbanism, unlike, for example, Carthage looted and rebuilt many times. ????????????????❤️????☕????
The site of Dougga is remarkable by its size - 70 hectares - the good conservation of its monuments and the historical wealth of its Libyan, Punic, Numidian, Romano-African and Byzantine past and among the monuments, there is the theater and the Capitol. ????????????❤️The theater, built in 168 or 169, is one of the best preserved in Roman Africa and can accommodate 3,500 spectators while Dougga has only 5,000 inhabitants. It belongs to a series of imperial public buildings whose construction extends over two centuries and which have little difference from a theoretical model, except for the adaptation to the ground, minor development or the ornamentation for which local architects may have had some freedom. ????????????????❤️????☕????
With a diameter of 63.5 m, the theater is supported by a hill. The cavea reaches a height of 15 m and has three sets of bleachers, nine large on the first level, six on the second and four on the upper level, or 19 steps in total. The orchestra is unusually small (eight meters in diameter), due to the place taken by the five very wide rows of seats reserved for notables. The stage is 36.75 m wide and 5.5 m deep. The stage wall has almost completely disappeared; there remains only one base with three exedra, open on the three entrances of the actors, and several columns that framed these entrances. ????????????❤️
A dedication, engraved on the pediment of the stage and on the portico that dominates the city, recalls its builder, P. Marcius Quadratus, who "built his money for his homeland" the building and offered on the occasion of the dedication "scenic performances, live performances, a feast and gymnastics games". ????????????????❤️????☕????
The theater is still animated by classical pieces, notably during the Dougga International Festival and is the subject of conservation works ????????????❤️
Good Evening and Happy week ahead my dear friends ????????????????❤️????☕????
Thanks for all comments and all support ????????????????❤️????☕????
