On the right side of Anakena Beach, overlooking the sea, at the foot of Mount Maunga Hau Epa, is the Ahu Ature Huki. This is a single Moai that was the first to be raised on the island in modern times. The idea came from the famous Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, who related his stay on the island in 1956 in his book “Aku Aku”, encouraged several islanders to raise the statue to test their theories. The Moai is dated 1200.

This is interesting. I'm pretty sure that same bird was sitting on the exact moai when I was there 2 years ago. I have photos of it. Brilliant. Nice gallery.
