Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home studio in Iowa. Photography is a growing hobby for me, so my "home studio" is a light box on my kitchen table!

Time

This was taken in midafternoon while my oldest was still at school, my youngest was napping, and my middle was busy playing.

Lighting

With this photo I was experimenting with lighting from the back, and I love how it added the bright color to the inside of the flower.

Equipment

This was shot on my Canon Rebel T6 with some extension tubes. I used a Manfrotto tripod and on camera flash with two portable lights.

Inspiration

As a scientist in a former life, I love the details, which means I love macrophotography. This flower was from a Mother's Day bouquet my 5yr old son picked out, so of course it made a perfect subject to practice on.

Editing

I reduced noise and increased brightness and saturation slightly.

In my camera bag

I've added some things since this photo was taken. I now have a Canon 100mm macro lens that I always carry with me, and also love my Sigma 150-600mm lens. Although I do have a tripod, I usually don't bring it with me since I love the flexibility to shoot handheld.

Feedback

Macro requires a lot of patience. At least for me, I usually get more throw-away shots than keepers. Just keep experimenting, and you'll get some beautiful photos in the process :)
