Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken out on my deck at my last house - a small cabin by the sea on the west coast of Scotland

Time

This was a summer afternoon, I'd been sat in the sun with the cats who couldn't get enough of chasing all the dragonfly's around our pond. They'd caught this one and I rescued it but a little too late. I put it on the deck out of reach where we have the sheep skull sitting. It managed to crawl onto the skull but never made it any further

Lighting

I had a lovely mid afternoon summer sun coming in, so I just twisted the skull until it was facing the sun to get that perfect brightness

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D5200 with a standard 18-22mm lense. No other equipment as I hadn't intended on taking any photos

Inspiration

I'd spent quite a few hours trying to catch a shot of the dragonfly's. Although just the common breed, they are so beautifully coloured and I'd not been lucky yet as they always zipped off at the last second. Once I realised my chance I was straight in for the camera in case it recovered and took off.

Editing

I shot this in standard colour but decided it didn't do the subject justice. I used lightroom to take all the colour out and upped the contrast and highlights to make the body really stand out against the bleached skull

In my camera bag

Absolutely my Nikon 5200. I usually start with the 18-22mm lense but I always carry a 18mm wide angle macro with me as well, just in case

Feedback

A cat that's prone to catching insects? Otherwise patience and a high shutter speed, sunny days are perfect as the bugs are usually out then and you get some lovely vivid colours
