Location
This photo was taken during a photographer meetup event. Oklahoma City has a very active and nurturing photography community. This model is one of my favorites. She's expressive and knows how to give you something different with each shutter click.Time
We always shoot after 6 p.m. This was getting really close to sunset.Lighting
She has vibrant red hair (you can probably tell, even in black and white) so I placed her with the sun at her back. The sun shined through her hair, a little fill flash was all I needed to get a great shot.Equipment
I believe I was shooting with a Nikon D750 and a Phottix MItros+ for this shoot.Inspiration
I imagined this in black and white before I even took the photo. Her hair and freckles, with that back lighting, I just knew the contrast would look great. Plus there was highlights on the concrete behind her I discovered during post, that added even more contrast and really made her pop off the screen.Editing
I don't usually get too heavy handed with editing. I pull my shots into Adobe Lightroom and do just basic edits, most of the time. I like to keep the color channels when I convert to black and white, rather than just going grey scale. That way, you can play with luminosity to have far more control over the contrast. In my camera bag
Lately I have been using a Nikon Z6 with my current favorite lens, a Sigma 24-70/2.8. I still have my D750 and my D7000. For wide shots I have a Rokinon 14/2.8, and I still have a Tamron 70-200/2.8 (which shoots but needs replaced with a newer model). I've switched to Godox for flash, because of the versatility and expandability of the system. I have have numerous film cameras that I love to break out now and again. I shoot medium and large format, in addition to digital and 35mm film.Feedback
If you don't have an active community in your area, create one. Get photographers together. Invite people of all sorts to get their pictures taken by growing photographers. Make sure photographers share their images with the "models" and share their social medias. Grow the community, by encouraging integrity, and ethical practices. Businesses are also likely to get involved. Some of our businesses allow us to shoot within their properties (even after hours occasionally). It does help that sometimes we have a camera store involved in the shoots. They bring loaner gear and instructors. Everyone grows in an environment like this.
