This is a small town carnival, in Moore, Oklahoma, on the 4th of July.Time
Fireworks started after 9:30, and this was one of the first shots I took, if I remember correctly.Lighting
This was my first digital camera, and I was still trying to get the hang of using it. I did about a 5 second exposure at f/14.Equipment
I was using a Nikon D80, and likely the 18-55 kit lenses at that time. I was using a tripod.Inspiration
Since I first started shooting, night time has always been one of my favorite subjects. Fireworks, lightning, light trails, anything that was usually shot at night was on my list.Editing
I always try to capture it, in camera , the way I want to picture look at the end. While I’ve taken classes on Photoshop and feel confident in my abilities, I’ve never been heavy-handed on editing. Nothing this image was added or taken away. They stopped the wheel for the show, and I did consider compositing a Ferris wheel in that was running but ultimately decided against it.In my camera bag
I currently shoot with a Nikon D750. I usually have a Rokinon 14 mm, a Tamron 28-75 2.8, and a Tamron 70-200 2.8 with me.Feedback
For shooting fireworks, the best advice I can give is to keep your f-stop around F8 to F11. Don’t open your shutter for too long or you’ll get too much overlap in the fireworks and be patient. Hit the trigger as the fireworks are going up. Ideally, I like getting the trail up, as well as the bursts trailing off just a little.
