Location
This image was created in Cartersville GA. We used a local field within walking distance of our home. It is a favorite location of ours for our portrait offerings.Time
We captured this image approaching sunset on an extremely warm summer Sunday evening. We time our shoots to coincide with the sun before it reaches the tree line. We love this look in our portraits and so do our clients.Lighting
The lighting used in this image was two sources. My fiancé was backlit using the sun to give her that beautiful warm glow around her. The I used the GoDox AD200Pro x2 and the GoDox AD-B2 head. This allows me to combine two of the strongest and most portable 200 watt lighting solutions into one for one extremely powerful and portable 400 watt setups. I diffused this wonderful light source using my favorite modifier! The Glow EZ Lock Beauty Dish in 34” size. This beauty dish is double diffused and comes with beauty plate, and grid to use optionally. I had both attached for this image to keep the light focused on her. The beauty dish combined with the double diffused panel really eliminates hotspots and allows me to light her beautifully and evenly! I’m a huge fan of the GoDox system!Equipment
All of the gear used for this image is below. This is my absolute favorite setup for portraits of any type. Send me a message if you have any questions! Camera - Canon EOS R, shot manual, RAW image only. Lens - Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art Lighting - Backlit by the amazing sun! Flash used was GoDox AD200Pro x2, AD-B2 head, diffused using Glow EZ Lock 34” Beauty Dish.Inspiration
My subject. My beautiful fiancé. Few people have the opportunity to meet their equal, yet have the ability to photograph them too as I do. I am lucky enough to spend the rest of my life with such an amazing women. To capture what I see everyday using a camera is just too much to articulate. This image was a vision of ours for a couple of months. My fiancé and I came up with everything we wanted to accomplished and were patient enough for the right time to get it right!Editing
Yes I did. I have to give credit where it’s due here. I take my post processing inspiration from Daniel Venter of “Shoot, Create, Captivate” Daniel is an amazing photographer and one that I truly enjoy learning from. For this image I used Adobe Lightroom for a light edit. Just to bring exposure, and tones to where I want them. Then using many of the techniques Daniel teaches, I edited this image in Photoshop building up to the final version gradually. I can’t thank him enough for making these edits possible. In my camera bag
Currently I use a Thinktank Streetwalker 2 HD bad and it’s pretty big, and very heavy. I’m a big guy so it’s perfect for me. For portrait work my camera is the Canon EOS R, and for wildlife I’ll change it to the Canon 7D mkii. For portrait shoots I keep the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art, Sigma 85mm 1.4 Art, Canon 70-200mm L f/2.8 IS, and Canon 16-35mm L f/4 IS. When shooting wildlife I’ll remove the 70-200 and 85mm and use my Sigma 150-600mm C.Feedback
Practice! I can’t stress this the importance of knowing ALL of your gear, it’s capabilities, limitations, strengths, and weaknesses! I’m always learning and I don’t think any photographer stops learning no matter how much time and money is invested. Shooting into the sun and capturing a detailed image is very difficult. It’s near impossible to do without using off camera flash. My recommendations for doing this without it would be to place your subject so that when you find your composition, the sun is outside the frame and in the opposite corner of the frame from your subject.
