Behind The Lens

Location

I had driven out into the countryside to visit a farmer that sells handmade cheese. This area of farmland is beautiful with rolling hills, bright blue skies and those Monet clouds that look like popcorn. On my way to the farmer, I spotted this church. I knew on my trip back to the city, I would have to stop by and photograph this forgotten gem.

Time

It was late afternoon. The blue bird skies quickly became overcast, which is my favorite kind of light.

Lighting

As the overcast skies diminished the shadows, the old colors became more intense, emphasizing the deep cracks and peeling textural paint.

Equipment

My trusty D300, with really right stuff tripod, and a simple setting of ISO 125.

Inspiration

Seeing this little church, once so alive with faith and the gathering of people, I thought to myself, "you are never abandoned." Here I am shooting you in all of your rickety splendor, imagining your past life. The little yellow flowers on the door tell me someone else appreciates you too. With a storm rolling in, the feeling of history seemed to intensify.

Editing

I did nothing but crop.

In my camera bag

A couple of nikons, with my trusty right stuff tripod. A flashlight and always a spare battery.

Feedback

See the beauty in the simplest things. One is always surrounded by a million "to be" fantastic shots!
