f/5.6 - approximately 1 minute with vibration reduction turned ON. Total blackness surrounds this plant. The tower lights illuminating the steam, and the night breeze provided all the light.Equipment
Nikon D300, 18-200 Nikor Zoom, Polarizing Filter, Really Right Stuff Tripod.Inspiration
This potential shot, at first, seemed to be about opposites. Nuclear vs farming. After surveying the landscape and looking for the perfect vantage point, the picture in my head came together. In college, I was inspired by photographer, Michael Kenna's black and white ethereal landscapes; specifically his nuclear power generating towers. This particular station sits in the middle of hundreds of acres of corn. The towers hum in the blackness, the corn stalks rustle in the brisk night wind. Farm sounds travel across the fields, like on a lake - perfect for vivid imaginations and the quest for that one perfect exposure. All that was needed was a cloud free sky to make this photo happen - and that is exactly what took place during the peak of the Harvest Moon.Editing
The image was shot in raw and jpeg, simultaneously. A slight sharpening is all that was needed. In my camera bag
Nikon D300, 105 Macro, 18-200 Zoom, Hoya HD2 Circular Polarizing Filter, Really Right Stuff Tripod. The little things: a spray bottle of water, an LED light on a neck chain, gloves, pepper spray, a black backdrop cloth, aluminum foil piece (for reflections), remote release, and a phone!Feedback
Patience and planning, along with a rock solid tripod. Be able to work your camera in the dark; by touch and feel. A high end camera isn't needed, just good thinking.
