Behind The Lens

Location

This was actually taken at the International Photo Festival Olten, where I was invited to speak about my work and the simplicity to create interesting portraits. Therefore I demonstrated what you can do with nothing more than a door.

Time

I don't know exactly but it doesn't even matter. The key to a portrait like this is something different. Time of the day just affects the ISO maybe.

Lighting

The lighting is simple as hell! She was sitting inside the room, right behind the open door, where no direct sunlight is hitting her anymore. And I was standing outside the door. This leads to a perspective, slightly from above, so that the body is already blurred, even when working with a "not so wide opened" aperture, which gives you more contrast and sharpness in the image. And even with a zoom lens you can achieve results like this. And because she's looking towards me, she looks upwards, and that leads to wonderful highlights in her eyes, because the sky is mirroring in her eyes.

Equipment

I just used a Canon Eos R with a 50mm lens at f/2.8.

Inspiration

I love pictures where the eyes are the brightest part of the image and the face stands out. This is easily achieved by creating a dark environment.

Editing

Yeah, I did some, even when it was not very much. The final image is just a lightroom edit with no retouch at all. I just added some grain, hell I love grain! And I increased the overall contrast. Thats all.

In my camera bag

I love to travel light, so my equipment is the Canon EOS R or the Fuji GFX, depending on what I wanna create. Usually I carry a 35mm, 50mm, and a 85mm with me. When I travel with my Fuji, I only have the 63mm which is about 50mm on full frame.

Feedback

Just as explained above. Put your model behind an open door and stand outside the door. Then maybe try to move the model a bit left and right or closer to you and find the best spot. Thats all.
