Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at Ricketts Glen State Park in Pennsylvania. Roughly halfway through the trail towards the lowest point of the waterfalls.

Time

This was taken in the early afternoon in order to compensate for the dark tree cover above the creek.

Lighting

The lighting was uneven due to the tree cover and full sun during the time. It was not the ideal time to photograph the scene, however, it was the only option at the time.

Equipment

To capture this photograph I used my Nikon d610, a Nikon 50mm 1.8, a graduated filter, and a tripod.

Inspiration

I had always wanted to try and capture the movement of water in photography. This hike was my first attempt to do so, and it was a great success.

Editing

In the post-processing, I changed a couple of things within this image. I first lowered both the exposure and the highlights to create a more even photo. After that, I lessened the shadows and slightly increased the vibrance and saturation to get more depth in the color of the image.

In my camera bag

My camera bag changes frequently to accommodate what type of photography I want to focus on at the time. I always have my Nikon D610 camera with my 50 mm 1.8 and my 28-85mm 2.4 lenses. Additionally, I have a 35mm film camera and occasionally a medium format film camera depending on the day and the length of the shoot. In terms of accessories, I always have an extra battery or two, my SD card collection, a JCH film organizer, cleaning products, extra chargers and cords, and finally a variable ND filter set.

Feedback

I would make sure to consider the location and the time of day. When trying to capture such images many things like trees, time of day, and even the water levels in the area are all important to consider before heading to a location.
