Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the paddock area at a closed road course for auto racing at Sebring International in Florida.

Time

I like to walk the paddock to see what uniques shots I can find, usually in the morning or evening when drivers are at their meetings. Facing the back straight from the paddock, I prefer this time of day, early to mid morning.

Lighting

Sebring has some great areas that capture sunlight on the hoods of cars as they drive around the turns. The challenge is to be at the infield around daylight hours, as action night shooting is nearly impossible in close-up. Turn one is behind me in the scene, on an overcast morning. Rain on the track make for interesting views from Turn 1 photographer’s stand.

Equipment

I always shoot in natural light, with my Nikon D 5000 or D3500. My 55mm Nikkor lens was hand-held, as are my other lenses, Sigma 200-400 or Sigma 200-600, used for action shots.

Inspiration

Images in context call out to me; I take the shot as I see it. This one said, “oh, the curves on this car remind me of the track course with all its turns that the cars must maneuver through.”

Editing

Never post-processing at this stage. Sometimes just cropping…

In my camera bag

I backpack my change of lenses, lens dust covers and air; and rain gear as well. Plus, I remember my ear plugs, sun screen and lip protections. There is a pair of gloves and a skull cap for those wintry days, too.

Feedback

Keep an eye out to what calls you as a unique image that speaks to the viewer. Bend and stretch to see if you can frame your scene without having to crop too much.
