On the road south of Hana, Maui, you will drive past Wailua Falls by the roadside. As it happened it was drizzling rain so I dutifully ensconced my camera and tripod in a protective raincoat and set up to shoot this beautiful waterfall. The rain and mist created a primordial cast to the scene and, even though this was a very remote area of Maui, I could not help but wonder how the first native Hawaiians felt as they viewed this magnificent waterfall for the first time.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo of Wailua Falls, which is located south of Hana in Maui, Hawaii, on the southeast coast.

Time

We were driving toward Haleakala National Park, when we passed this waterfall around mid morning. A light and steady rain was falling.

Lighting

The light was very interesting. At ground level it was dark for mid morning, and the cloud cover was very low, yet I could see an outline of the sun, through the clouds, which provided light from above down toward the cascading water.

Equipment

I used my Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod with Sirui ball head to set up my Nikon D-850 with a Nikkor 16-35mm lens. I also head a raincoat on my gear since the rain was fairly steady. I had dry the lens on each exposure and cover it with my cap while fine-tuning my settings on each exposure.

Inspiration

On this particular morning, the rain was dictating photo opportunities, and I kept reminding myself that we would find a good photo opportunity, despite the weather. Imagine my excitement when we passed this wonderful scene. It was warm and humid, so I did not mind getting wet while capturing this photo.

Editing

I performed my usual adjustments in Adobe Lightroom, and highlighted a few areas on the leaves around the falls to bring more depth to the scene.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D-850 and a D-810 for backup, along with assorted Nikkor and Sigma lenses. I also carry a full Lee Filter system with 6 and 10 stop neutral density filters and graduated ND filters. This allows me to photograph throughout the day and create interesting scenes by leveraging water and cloud movement.

Feedback

This was a fairly straight forward capture. I shoot exclusively in manual mode and take multiple exposures, stopping up or down, so that while post processing, I can select the photo with the best exposure. My advice is to developers your skills in manual mode, as it allows for much greater control of varying light and other conditions.
