We were on our annual sojourn to Maui a few years back and experienced the power of Mother Nature unlike any we seen before. El Niño created conditions on Maui's north shore that resulted in the highest and most violent surf since 1998, according to professional surfers. News reports stated that one fatality resulted in beach closings and that 23 surfers had to be extracted from the surf break by rescue jet ski, due to their inability to paddle back to shore. I was fortunate to be in the right place, at the right time, and captured this special display of nature's beauty and fury, which only comes once every few decades. The waves reached 30-40 feet at Ho‘okipa beach with spray trails of 20-30 feet.
