The mandate of the Church of Saint Antao was Cardinal D. Henrique, Archbishop of Evora. He had it built where the medieval Hermitage of St. Antony once stood. To enable its construction, the Roman Arc de Triomphe was demolished.
Its construction dates from the beginning of 1557. It is an example of the late Renaissance period and features the so-called parlor churches of the time. Its interior is a unique lounge.
