This photo shows the wings of the freshly emerged black swallowtail butterfly starting to uncurl more.. the empty chrysalis are what they butterfly emerges from previously a caterpillar as it makes like a silk around the body lasting anywhere from 5 - 21 days til hatching for the swallowtail. You can see the silk like attachment of the empty chrysalis that holds it in place for the length of time needed to transform to butterfly. and they hold very strong for such small attachments. I do not touch the butterfly at this stage as it needs to awaken to its new world and stretch. It is too fragile at this stage still. beautiful as its wings are unfolding to show the beautiful colors in the wings...
