Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near my home at Travers Reservoir in Southern Alberta, Canada. Being a member of the Alberta Aurora Chasers has given me the opportunity to learn about this wonderful natural atmospheric phenomenon.

Time

I guess a better question would be What time of the night was this picture taken! It was taken at 12:16:42 AM - so just after midnight!

Lighting

Since this is a picture about lights, there were no external lights used to take this shot.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D3, a Canon 24 f1.4. I use a window pod, makes it a bit more comfortable being out and about during the night. Also I feel safer being in my car.

Inspiration

Being a member of the Alberta Aurora Chaser group on Facebook helps me get inspired and also lets me know of the conditions for a possible display of the Northern Lights.

Editing

I probably did very little post processing. I might have boosted the exposure a bit.

In my camera bag

Besides camera, lens, tripod or window pod, remote release ... I usually have some spare batteries, extra cards, flashlight -also an extra lens with a different focal length. Warm clothing, gloves and tuque (Canadian) - some water is good to have. I make sure I have a blanket to put over my legs - having the window open at minus 30 can get mighty cold - lol!

Feedback

First of all, in order to see Northern Lights, you have to live in an area that is fortunate to see this natural display. The latitude of your location (either South or North) will determine that.
