This one has been coming back to our dam for years. He lost his lady to a neighbors dog while she was trying to protect their young ones years ago.Like most Waterbirds he hasn't taken a new mate and never will.He keeps coming back and I suspect a few of his offspring do also.

A large number of my photos are taken in my own "back yard" .I have a 2 acre rural property with a lovely dam,This shot was taken on the dam,The yellow reflection is from the fruit on the lemon tree.Time
This shot was taken late in the afternoon just as sunset started.A similar shot taken earlier showed blue and white reflections from the sky and clouds. Also the birds reflection showed little detail.Lighting
Learn the advantages of natural lighting and wide range of lighting different times and weather conditions can give.Equipment
The shot was hand held and taken with a very basic combination consisting of a Nikon D3100 and 55-300 kit lens.Inspiration
This Pacific Black Duck has been a regular visitor for many years and although he is a wild bird he is a willing photo subject !He lost his partner during a dog attack on his family years ago and like most waterbirds he has not taken another partner.Editing
Very simple adjustments and cropping done in Windows Photo Gallery .In my camera bag
My Nikon D3100 and 55-300 lens are constant companions as shots I take are usually brief opportunities given by birds etc and can turn very quickly from long distance birds to closeups of bees, butterflies or the same bird ! I have taught myself to be able to quickly take advantage of any of these shots with the 55-300 lens.Ihave just ordered a set of spacers and expect to use my other 18-55 kit lens more often.I also have a Canon SX 730Hs that is compact and easy to carry . A tripod which is rarely used, cleaning gear etc top off my list .Perhaps Santa might like to upgrade my gear but I am afraid my Mrs Santa shares the same budget !Feedback
I am 74 years old and a very late starter as a "photographer". Apart from the wonderful View Bug Community's guidance ,I have been self taught . Most of my shots have been take on our property and the main things I have learnt are to be always aware of the basics of composition, framing ,rule of thirds and choose the time of day and weather conditions that are best suited to the shots you are after.Morning and afternoon natural lighting differences can be used to great advantage. The other VERY IMPORTANT thing I have learnt is become a shutter bug and take LOTS of shots .I love catching Bees in flight and often take 50 or more shots quite often with only a few keepers. If you are not enjoying yourself stop !!
