Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my hometown Almere in the Netherlands. Almere is just half an hour away from Amsterdam, where I was born. My model is the son of my friend. His mother wanted to have some nice pictures of her son. And he himself thought it would be fun to be model of the day. He did very good and was easy to handle :)

Time

I like the early morning or the late afternoon. The shadows are getting longer and the color of the sky is soft and warm. I knew where I wanted to go with him. This is close to my house, we walked there, the sun was shining, it was around 17.00 hours. Under the bycicle bridge O found the perfect spot for the long shadow I wanted. The photo must have some power in it. Black and white is my favorite for portraits. And ik all came together in that place on that day woth this model.

Lighting

As I said before, I like to shoot in the late afternoon, the light is so soft and I do not have to use a filter. I love to shoot in daylight, use whatever there is. For me that is a challenge. I turned the photo to black and white, to give it more power en drama. I like to use the space around the model, so you can see where he is, in a city, in the landscape, whatever there is.

Equipment

I shoot with my Canon EOS D550, with a zoomlens 18-200 mm, f5.6.

Inspiration

I wanted to shoot at this location for a long time, but did not find the perfect model match and time to do it. I like the natural framr from the bridge. I already made this photo in my head, before I new when I could take it.

Editing

I love portraits in black and white. So I took the photo as color and changed it into black and white. I used picmonkey program to do that. I also used much more contrast. it gives the photo more power, I think.

In my camera bag

I do not have that much equipment. I use my CANON EOS D550 always. Mostly with mu 18-200 mm lens. Somethimes I use my 50 mm lens f1.8. I like natural light, but when necessary I use a flash.

Feedback

The best tip I can give you is... make lots of photo's. Rvery day. Try all sort of places, models or objects, in different light. Only if you know what you do not like, you can choose what you do like. Have lots of fun.
