Location
I took this photo at the top of Lion’s Head Mountain in South Africa after hiking and scrambling up, it was a phenomenal viewpoint.Time
One of my favourite images from this trip, we hiked midday to get to the peak for the sunset and stayed until just after the last sunlight had gone.Lighting
I’m a fan of the ‘in the moment’ shots, showing people what it’s really like to be in the places I capture. Just as golden hour past the colours really popped and the lights from the towns below began to appear. I dangled my legs over one of the ledges and captured this, dusted up trainers and all.Equipment
Shot on the Sony A7iii with a G Master 16-35mm 2.8 lens and no other equipment used.Inspiration
I was just happy to sit on the edge to take in where I was and the whole world opening up around me, but with the wide angle lens I thought I could add my perspective to the landscape and how I was seeing it.Editing
Light was fading quickly after blue hour so I mostly just brought back the shadows in lightroom and enhanced the colours slightly. This is a single RAW exposure and nothing much was needed to get it to how I envisioned it.In my camera bag
I carry two camera bodies, the Sony A7iii and the A6400, along with my go-to lens the 16-35mm 2.8 as well as the 70-200mm 2.8 since they’re my favourite focal lengths to use. On my travels I always bring my mavic air drone for the arial shots and maybe a GoPro for the times it’s too risky to get the Sony out, like if I’m scuba diving.Feedback
The light was amazing, but waiting for the colours to come though and shooting slightly under exposed allowed me to capture all of the details and still retain the colours of the landscape. The perspective on this image is everything, so it was worth the ‘risk’ of being in the edge, but I would never recommend putting yourself at risk just to ‘get the shot’.
