Behind The Lens

Location

This would have been in the music room at the house of the subject, where his band practices and records their music.

Time

I think it was later in the evening, don't recall the specific time. We were indoors though, so time of day isn't all that relevant.

Lighting

Sure. I definitely had at least one strobe set up with a softbox diffuser, 26" I think. Off camera, triggered remotely. I think it was just the one light.

Equipment

Camera - Canon 5DmkIV. Lens - Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art (just, one absolute gem of a lens). Flash - Either a Godox 860 or Flashpoint R2, which are the same flash just one is the flashpoint brand. They are my go to strobe. I also used a Wescott 26" softbox, and triggered the flash off camera with the Flashpoint wireless remote.

Inspiration

Well, like a lot of my band photos, the band Day Old Dozen. They are a talented group of guys and I love that I get to sit in on their sessions with my camera gear. As to the lighting, I guess I can thank Annie Leibovitz for being the inspiration for how I light a lot of my scenes.

Editing

Yes, I took the photo in color, and used LR to make it a BW, then from their played with the exposure and other individual elements until I got the look I wanted. I don't recall all the little tweaks beyond flipping it to BW. But, I will say that when it comes to BW, what you are looking to do is create a strong contrast between the bright and dark elements of the photo. They should both pop against each other.

In my camera bag

Geeze, that is a loaded question! Typically, I carry a large bag, the Lowepro 450AW. This will have at any given time... - At least 2 cameras, and at the time of the photo it would have been the 5DmkIV and the 80D. Now though, I have the Canon R5 and R6, and the 90D in addition to the 5D. I am pretty spoiled in this regard. - Lenses, this is a list. Tamron 24-70mm F2.8 G2 or Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM, Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS II USM, Canon EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS USM, Canon EF-S 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 IS STM, Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8L IS USM, Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art, Tamron 35mm F1.4 SP, Samyang 10mm F2.8, Sigma 105mm F2.8 Macro. At any given time I could have any combination of these lenses with me, typically at least 5 lenses. - A pair of flashes, either the Godox or Flashpoints I mentioned before, and the remote trigger for them, also a Flashbender reflector - A whole compliment of filters, ND and CPL. - Spare batteries, spare memcards, cleaning supplies, bottled water, maybe a snack. Its just, a lot of stuff.

Feedback

Basically, get the room dark, angle the light from above your subject at about 45 degrees, and use a shutter speed fast enough to black out the non-lit areas, while being slow enough to create bright areas where the light hits. 1/200th did it for me here, but I think if I had to do it again I would prefer a bit faster. If I had to guess I forgot to turn on the HSS of the flash and 1/200th is the sync speed.
