Behind The Lens

Location

This was at a band session for my friend's band "Day Old Dozen". I am very lucky in that they allow me to bring my gear to their practice sessions to practice taking photos, play with lighting, and even try out the video functions on my camera. It's been great for my experience.

Time

I think it was evening, but it was indoors so it really is not relevant to the photo. They usually practice in the evenings.

Lighting

I'm told this is what is known as "Rembrandt" lighting. I really don't know these terms, since I am almost completely self taught. I jsut know what I like about other photos, and try to figure out how to replicate the results. In this case, it would be the incomparable Annie Leibovitz and her work that I was trying to emulate here. If you have not checked her out, do so, she is great!

Equipment

Canon 80D, Canon 50mm F1.8 STM, Westcott Octabox 26", Flashpoint R2 speedlite fired off camera wirelessly. No tripod. I might have had a second flash for bounce fill, I can't remember. I was really surprised that I used my Canon 50mm on this shot, since normally I would use the Sigma 50mm F1.4. For the money, the Canon can do very well.

Inspiration

Mostly my friend Christian. He is a great guitar player, and I love shooting him. He is my best model, even if nothing we do is posed! When I am around him and the band and they are playing, all I can see is the old photos from Rolling Stone, and I think about how I want to make shots that are that iconic. And while I might never be in Rolling Stone, it's still a lot of fun shooting these guys.

Editing

Certainly. I use Adobe Lightroom, where I converted to black and white, and did minor tweeks to exposure. Not a lot of re-touching on this one. I prefer to shoot in color then convert to BW, as opposed to using the mono setting on the camera. This is because I can also have a color version of the photo if I prefer, but BW can never become color once it is shot that way. It is also better in post too, since you have more data to play with in LR.

In my camera bag

This is always a loaded question. I am a do-it-all type, so I really have to be ready for almost anything. By default, I have a Lowepro 450 AW backpack, and this is what is almost always in it: Canon 5DmkIV, Canon 80D, EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS USM, Tamron 24-70mm F2.8 G2, Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS II USM, Canon EF-S 24mm F2.8 STM, Canon 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 IS STM, Canon 2X telephoto extender III, Sigma 50mm F1.4 ART, Kenko extension tubes (12mm, 20mm, 36mm), 2 Flashpoint speedlites with a wireless trigger, various ND and polarizer filters of various sizes, small reflector, various spare caps for lenses and bodies, spare batteries, cleaning supplies, and a Vanguard tripod attached to the side. I probably should narrow this down a bit...

Feedback

Learn how to use flash, and learn how to use it off camera. I know the whole "natural light" thing is popular, but adding light to fill or shape the shadows is also worth while. I can't believe I ever had a time when I didn't use it. It's not always possible though, so make due with what you have. But definitely learn it, it's a game changer.
