Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in my home studio back when I first was starting to pursue my degree.

Time

I believe it was about midday so I had to block out the window to be able to use my hot lights to get a more dramatic lighting.

Lighting

At the time I shot this I only had hot lights and was pretty new to them so I used them a lot. They were great fun to experiment with; I actually tried to pretty precise with the lighting for this since it was for a recreation assignment for a class.

Equipment

I used hot lights, a tripod and my first DSLR that has since been retired.

Inspiration

As I mention previously this was a recreation assignment for class. We were meant to take a photo from a photographer we learned about in the module we were studying and re-create one of their photos. I chose the photo Face Behind Veil by John Guttman taken in 1939 I believe. This is why I was so precise with the lighting, I tried to get the reflections in the eyes in the same place. I couldn't find and hats with birdcage veils like I believe the woman in Guttman's photo wears so I actually bought a tiny bridal veil from Michael's and pinned on in such I way that it might look as if she was wearing a hat with a birdcage veil. It's the biggest difference in the photos, the lace in Guttman's is very elegant and black while mine has the these little tiny rhinestones and is white lace. I though it was pretty good improvising for what I was capable of doing at the time.

Editing

There was post processing for sure. I had to crop it really close to her face to not only for recreation purposes but also to hide the fact that I just pinned a veil to her head rather than placed a fancy hat on her head. I also converted it to black and white and upped the detail just a smidge in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Canon Rebel SL2 DSLR, remote shutter, light meter, gray card, reflectors of various sizes, two tripods, battery charger, SD cards.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to improvise or experiment with different props and crops.
