This photo was taken at Davao City Crocodile Park using my Nikon D90 and Nikkor 50mm 1.8. This was my came-back portrait shoot since I was in hiatus for almost 2 years in photography due to unavailability of gears at the moment. I only had an Android mobile phone that time. Gladly, I manage to save an amount to buy a gear and this was the opportune time to test my eyes if I still have the skills in portrait photography.Time
This shoot was done in the afternoon around 2PM. The sun was very high that time... Though it was a very challenging shoot because of harsh light from the sun, I found a shady spot near a tree and there, I took some shots.Lighting
The picture that I had in my mind was not this, because of the situation and harsh light (2PM). I do not have any other light source like off camera flash, I only have an ambient/natural light so, I cannot go under the shade or under the sun. I adapted with the situation and improvised my composition. I positioned my model near the shade of the tree but not really under the tree so I can still have the bight light touching/wrapping the face of my model since I needed a photograph that's something lighter yet mysterious and an image that looks like not from the park. I waited till the clouds covered the sun, and when it happened, I immediately grabbed that moment and took the shot. My angle was above my subject so I can make it look "new" from the park's view. If I lowered my angle, other people, cars, and trees will be seen.Equipment
I used my Nikon D90 and a Nikkor 50mm 1.8D. I do not have flashes at the moment so I am an ambient/natural light shooter.Inspiration
My inspiration about this shot was light and mysterious. Mostly, mysterious photos I've seen were dark, leading to something really mysterious but for me, I can be in the light but remain mysterious like a human being who's personality is light but there's something in that person that makes him/her interesting.Editing
Yes. Post-processing is a must in my work since I am a portrait photographer. The skin is a must. Skin enhancement is very important to me and aside from the skin, there are colors that I needed in my image that my camera can't give me. Aside from the story of my image, Colors are very important in my photography. Even in Black and Whites, colors are very important. It tells you the mood, the drama, the tone of the image. I used Adobe Lightroom for enhancing colors and Adobe Photoshop for more edits. In my camera bag
Taking photographs is not just my work, it's my art. Just like any painter who has his/her paint brush, pencils, colors inside his/her bag, I always bring my iphone 7, mobile phone clip, and table-tripod inside my office-working bag to take on the spot photos and videos anytime. For my photography works, I have two bags. The one that I work with now is a small sized organizer kit bag converted into camera bag with my Sony A6000 as my main camera. My lenses are Kaxinda 35mm 1.6 manual lens, Yongnou 50mm 1.8S DA DSM, an Andoer External Flash and Trigger. I also have 2 extra batteries since the A6000 battery won't last that long. My other bag is where I put my old time buddy, Nikon D90 and Tamron 17-50 2.8 plus my two YN external flashes and YN triggers. This 2nd bag is my back-up camera bag.Feedback
My advice for other aspiring photographers out there, especially for photographers like me who's not rich, (notice my gears? they are all the cheapest ones), aside from learning the BASICS of photography, ADAPT and IMPROVISE. Since cheaper gears are not as badass as expensive gears, it does not mean it can't capture the best photographs. Just use your brain and heart. Be wise, be creative, be innovative, and have more patience. Have more patience because you are going to work your butt out there because (if you are like me) your gears aren't gonna give you ease. Above all, put your heads down always. Be humble, be kind. Treat your models not your subjects but your queen.
