Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during a photography workshop at Abreeza Mall, Davao City. It was a free event so I grabbed the opportunity of attending the workshop. I need to learn photography every single day, and opportunities like this is a golden opportunity for me to boost up my learnings.

Time

This was around 3PM after the workshop session. This happened inside a mall in the city so it was kinda dim so I needed an external source of light. I need to add light so that my image will have tones and to make it more alive than flat.

Lighting

I was not able to bring my external flash at the moment. It was a tragic time for me since I am going to shoot indoor (inside the mall) and my camera is not that good in low light situation plus my lens is a kit lens. In order to take a better image, I borrowed a video lamp for my shots. I used only one lighting set up (availability at the moment). I placed the video light at an angle my model's left side to produce a dramatic shadows and tones. Lighting is very essential in portrait photography. One learning I gained here is always bring a light source with you. An external flash, ring light or a video lamp will do.

Equipment

I used my old and trusty Nikon D90 and 18-105 kit lens plus a borrowed YN Video light during this shoot. I was not able to bring my external flash because I did not feel bringing it. Yet, it was a learning for me. If you want a clean portrait shot, have a better light source with you.

Inspiration

Emotions. It's what I love the most when taking photographs. I love narrative portraiture than just taking head shots alone. The model was strong and fierce. Her eyes tells it. She needs to survive life being a mother and being a working woman at the same time.

Editing

Post processing is part of the wholeness of photography. Post processing Apps are the darkroom of digital photography nowadays. I usually enhance most of my photos using Adobe Photoshop by correcting the colors and skin retouching plus making my photos look sharper or softer. In this photo I only used the global enhancement, skin retouch, and boosting the warm color.

In my camera bag

For wedding or any fast event shoots I use my Nikon D90 with Nikkor 18-105 kitlens and Tamron 17-50 2.8 plus two Yongnuo flashes with Remote Trigger. My back up camera is my Sony a6000 + 16-50 kitlens. Yes, my gears are very old and cheap because its all I can afford. Yet, I love these cameras.

Feedback

For those aspiring photographers or newbies or for advance who wanted to take similar photos, my advice to you are know composition, know how to take sharp images by knowing your gears. These two are far most important to me because once you miss a shot with your gears, you can't help it during post process. Once you fail in your composition, you can't undo it in post process. You can crop your un-compose photos at post process, but don't do this all the time. Take and Make great photos with your camera, then make it 200% more beautiful when you post process. Don't shoot because you have a pretty and sexy model. Shoot life, shoot what you love, shoot what you feel. Shoot wrinkles because these are the landscape of emotions as what portrait photographers say. High-end gears are great, but don't be intimidated if your gears are low-end, old, or obsolete. As long as it can take photos, work with it because its limitations will make you a better photographer.
