Location
This photo was taken in Watkins Glen State Park in Upstate New York. I was totally blown by this narrow winding gorge with waterfalls and other interesting features. This place has so many opportunities for great photos, one can get lost there for days.Time
I hiked though the gorge with my family in the late morning/early afternoon. We are not early risers, but thankfully on this day the weather held up nicely and, though it was quite hot "outside", in the gorge it was quite pleasant.Lighting
Because of the winding nature of the gorge, the lighting constantly changes. Every few feet you get a different shot, with different colors and shadows. This is especially important when taking photos of waterfalls or the water pools at the bottom of the gorge. I had to walk around for a few times and frequently get off the actual hiking trail to get the lightning i wanted.Equipment
For this I used my typical kit is a Nikon D7000 and a Nikkor 18-200 DX lens.Inspiration
I was captivated by the color combination of brownish water pool, dark grey rock and the patches of green. The veil-like waterfall provided an additional detail to make the photo more interesting. The gorge is usually crowded with tourists and they add another layer and another piece of the story that is told by this picture.Editing
I did not use any post-processing for this shot.In my camera bag
My usual kit is my Nikon D7000 with the Nikkor 18-200 DX lens. Sometimes, I bring with me my old Nikkor 35-70 FX f2.8 and Nikkor 28 f1.8 or Nikkor 50 f1.8 if I want a lighter lens.Feedback
Don't be afraid to get wet (though don't wet your gear!) and to get off the beaten trail to get a better view or an unusual angle.
